Support Group Child Minder
The Support Group Child Minder is responsible for overseeing and monitoring children’s play activities and assures the immediate and continued safety of the children in their care during Henderson House support groups.
Responsibilities:
- Arriving 15 minutes in advance of Henderson Support Group meetings (groups are usually held at 6:00pm–7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays)
- Informing Volunteer Coordinator in advance if unable to show up on your scheduled day and time
- Greeting parents and children as they arrive for support groups
- Supervising children of support group members at all times during support group
- Maintaining a safe play environment
- Exercising trauma-informed care of children, as they may be withdrawn
- Preparing and serving snacks and refreshments about half-way through group time
- Helping children with homework and school work as needed
- Reading, playing games, watching movies, coloring, facilitating craft making as appropriate for the ages of children present
- Assisting with escorting children to the restroom
- Returning all outside toys to the covered area at the end of support group sessions
- Keeping toy/play areas organized
- Cleaning, sweeping, sanitizing toys, tables and play areas as needed
- Communicating any issues with children to their parents and the support group facilitator
Qualifications:
- Philosophy compatible to Henderson House Mission Statement, especially to include:
- Understanding the experience of domestic and sexual violence survivors
- Understanding of oppression and how it supports interpersonal violence
- Understanding of the impact of trauma on survivors of violence
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of Henderson House clients
- Ability to work well with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to work with Henderson House staff as a team member
This position reports to: Henderson House Volunteer Coordinator and Support Group Facilitator
Time commitment: Approx. 2 hours/week
